Tug Master UK (London / Southampton)

Our large fleet of 70 tugs provides tailored towage services in twelve European ports: Rotterdam, Antwerp, Ghent, Flushing, Terneuzen, Zeebrugge, Liverpool, London, Southampton, Hamburg, Bremerhaven and Wilhelmshaven. These ports are major junctions where ships from all over the world bring their cargo and passengers or come to pick up cargo for further transportation. As a tug master, you are the ambassador of the tugboat, the company and its policies. With a proper and safe day-to-day operation, you guarantee the well-known excellent service of Kotug Smit Towage. As a tug master you command the tug and you will have authority over all who sail on board.

You are responsible for safe navigation in the broadest sense of the word and ensure that all crew members are able to carry out the necessary work on board. You report to the Operations Manager of the UK Area.

As a Tug Master, you plan the work in a manner that you can always respect the legal resting times. You show authority and are able to make decisions when necessary with regard to the crew members, the tugboat, safety and environment, to prevent pollution and to request assistance from the shore where necessary. You will have the final responsibility for the tugboat and everyone who sail on her.

You ensure that the applicable legislation and regulations are compliant and that the management systems are implemented. You ensure that all certificates, administration and reporting are in order and valid. You implement the HSE policies as described in the fleet manuals.

You manage the crew and guide them in a consistent manner. You motivate them and give constructive feedback. You will regularly hold team meetings with the crew, organize Fire & Safety drills and familiarize new crew.

What type of applicant are we looking for?

  • At least 3 years of experience in a similar position.
  • Nautical and technical knowledge. Required certificate and documents according to the UK flag state to be able to sail as an Engineer on board a UK tugboat.
  • At least mandatory certificates and documents to be able to sail as captain on board a tugboat with UK flag
  • A valid certificate 'II / 3 Master near Coastal Voyages'
  • Knowledge through your experience as a tugboat captain
  • Experience with sailing on ASD and ATD tugs
  • Up to date knowledge of relevant management systems
  • Fluent in English
  • Passion for the maritime industry
